Owasippe: A tail of two weather patterns

The Coyotes took to the trail at Owasippe this weekend, over two days of starkly different weather. On Saturday, the Elementary team was the top team on the day under hot sunny skies where pre-race staging looked like a UCI race, with parents holding umbrellas to shade their racers from the blistering heat. Sunday dawned with temps in the high 50s, clouds, and the threat of rain. Varsity, JV and Advanced MS raced in the cool temps with a dry course, while the Novice racers proved to be the true warriors of the weekend, racing in a constant downpour on the sandy course. At the end of the day, the HS team ended up on top!

In perhaps the best illustration of the contrast in weather, here are the team podium shots from Saturday and Sunday, presented without further comment!

Team scores this week illustrate the importance of podiums in the Advanced Elementary and Varsity categories. The HS victory was paced by Gerrit Boer’s 3rd place Varsity Boys podium finish and Madine Whitmer’s 5th place Varsity Girls podium. In the elementary race, the clean sweep of the top three girls’ Advanced Elementary race spots, virtually guaranteed the Coyote victory. Of interest, our relatively small number of middle-school participants also shows up in the team scoring as well! It’s a good thing we are stacked with 5th graders.
