To prevent burnout of our most frequent volunteers, we are asking every family that races to take a shift at each of our home races.
The races where we expect every family to volunteer their time are:
- Merrell on August 24th and 25th
- Owasippe on September 14th and 15th.
The good news is that volunteering at a mountain bike race is easy, and actually enjoyable. Jobs you can sign up for include:
- Course Marshal – You get assigned a spot on the course (like an intersection, or technical feature). This job ensures you a prime spectator’s place for the race. Marshals are asked to help direct traffic, report back if there are issues, and can serve as the evac-point if there are injured riders. Marshals often bring their own bike to ride to their point of the course, so mobility is required (walking or biking a fair distance).
- Welcome Tent / Registration Tent – If you are more likely to pick a seated volunteer role, there are jobs at the MiSCA welcome/registration tents that do not require physical labor or a long bike ride.
- Course Setup / Teardown – Light physical labor setting up or taking apart the start/finish venue of the race. Especially the teardown jobs are really only ever filled by the host-team for the race (that’s us at Owasippe and Merrell) so please consider signing up for this so people from 3 hours away can drive home (they’ll do the same for us when we’re in the Detroit area, for example).
Signups for Volunteer shifts typically become available a few days before the race. We will notify you in our e-Newsletter when the volunteer slots are open.
