Cannonsburg Race Review & Season Wrap-Up

Race #6 is in the books, and that means our season has ended! While it’s on, MiSCA season is a whirlwind of races, busy weekends, and finding time in between to keep our regular lives on track. Then *poof* it’s gone, and we wonder what we’re supposed to do with our weekends!

Cannonsburg – Elevation Domination

Our team climbs a lot of hills. At practice, I’ve seen most of the elementary team atop “the double” at Cannonsburg after practice, and on those same days I’ve seen varsity riders doing hill repeats on the other side of the slope. Sandy trails are the norm here too, and when you combine those two it seems almost expected to see Coyotes on top of podiums. Our preparation paid off, and we wrapped up the season with a HS Victory, a HS State Championship, an Elementary Victory and an Elementary State Championship (the first one ever awarded!). Varsity men and women completed 1,800 feet of climbing over two laps, making this the hilliest MiSCA course ever.

Race results for the Coyotes were stellar as well with multiple race winners, another total podium sweep for Upper Elementary Girls, and numerous tight finishes.

Race Winners:

  • In the men’s Varsity Race, Luke Zuelke got to the front early in the first lap and held off a late charge by Brighton’s Hunter Post to win the race and clinch the state championship.
  • In the women’s varsity race, Anabel Miller attacked up the ski hill, opened up a 12 second gap and held on the win her first race of the season.
  • In HS Novice Women, Camille Natter won her race by nearly three minutes after opening up 90-second gap on the first lap, securing a state championship in her first year of mountain bike racing.
  • Luke DeWall (Advanced Elementary Male) turned in two novice laps in 45 miniutes even, winning the race, and clinching a state championship. Of special note, Luke (who is a 5th grader) turned in the fastest 2 laps of the Novice course of any rider, any age, on the day (including High School Novice, Middle School Novice and other elementary riders).
  • Hazel Cherney charged to her first victory of the year, leading the Coyotes dominant pack of Upper Elementary Girls to another podium sweep.
  • Tristan Hubbard continued his winning ways, capturing his fourth race victory of the year, en route to a state championship in Upper Elementary Boys.
  • Grand DeWall closed out the day for the Coyotes, winning his third race of the year, and ensuring he finished in the top 5 on points overall (despite only finishing 4 races in the series).
